Why Teach Music?

Music is a science

• It is exact, specific; and it demands exact acoustics. A conductor’s full score is a chart, a graph which indicates frequencies, intensities, volume changes, melody and harmony all at once and with the most exact control of time.

Music is mathematical

• It is rhythmically based on the subdivisions of time into fractions which must be done instantaneously, not worked out on paper.

Music is a foreign language

• Most of the terms are in Italian, German, or French; and the notation is certainly not English–but a highly developed kind of shorthand that uses symbols to represent ideas. The semantics of music is the most complete and universal language.

Music is history

• Music usually reflects the environment and time of its creation.

Music is a physical education

• It requires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lips, cheek, and facial muscles, in addition to extraordinary control of the diaphragmatic, back, stomach and chest muscles, which respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets.

Music is all these things, but most of all music is art

• It allows a us to take all these techniques and use them to create emotion.

We Teach Music!

• Not because we expect children to have a career in music.

• Not because we expect the children to play or sing all their lives.

• Not so they can relax and have fun. (which they do!!!)

• BUT–so that they will be human

• So they will recognize beauty

• So they will be sensitive

• So they will be closer to an infinite beyond this world

• So they will have something to cling to

• So they can develop their talent

• So they will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness and a more enhanced life.

That is Why We Teach Music!

Children who learn to play a musical instrument are usually from a privileged background where parents can afford to pay for expensive lessons. Our school promotes equality for all. Every year for the last 6 years the school (with funds from the parents association) has purchased recorders for the children in first class. The parents then pay the school half the purchase cost of the recorder. This year will be the first year that all the classes from 1st to 6th will be learning recorder. We look forward to many performances at assemblies throughout the year.

School Choir

The school choir has started rehearsals with Ms. Lokko and Ms. Fay. It meets after school every Tuesday from 3-4. Children from classes 3rd to 6th are welcome to join. The school choir shall perform at the Ecumenical Christmas Carol Service, the Christmas Mass, the Confirmation and the Communion. 40 members of the school choir will attend “The Lion King” in May 2013 as a reward for all their hard work. The parents association have generously offered to subsidise the tickets, so the children will only have to pay half of their cost.

The children learn a new song to sing at assembly every two weeks. They perform these songs every Friday with the other classes at their assembly. (Junior assembly; jun.inf.- 2nd class/ Senior assembly;3rd to 6th class)

School Concerts

All the children in the school will have an opportunity to perform at a school concert. The children from Junior Infants to 2nd class shall perform in Christmas concerts.

The children from 3rd to 6th class will perform in the Summer Concert at the end of year.
